Daugavpils police arrest 2 men after two-gun theft from a range
Two suspects are held on remand as prosecutors seek charges for weapon theft and unauthorized arms dealings.
Daugavpils police detained two men after a gun range theft involving two firearms, according to Latvia’s State Police (Valsts policija, VP).
The report traces the incident to late September. On 27 September at about 11:40, VP received information about the theft of two firearms from the premises of a gun range in Daugavpils. Police launched a search involving broad resources, including VP Special Task Unit officers and Daugavpils municipal police.
Investigators later established that the suspected men were in a fast-food restaurant. Municipal police officers detained the two men there. VP officers then carried out further procedural steps at the scene and found the stolen firearms.
Two days later, VP asked the court to apply a pre-trial detention measure to both detainees. The court ordered remand in custody for each of them.
VP opened a criminal case under the Criminal Law for firearm theft, using Section 175, Part 4, which carries a prison term of two to 10 years, with confiscation of property or without it, and probation supervision for up to three years.
The investigation is also qualified under the Criminal Law for unauthorized activities involving firearms or essential parts, ammunition, high-energy pneumatic weapons, explosives or explosive devices, covering manufacturing, repair, acquisition, storage, carrying, transporting, transfer or sale without the required permission. Prosecutors received the case materials in early October to begin prosecution.
The case status is at the stage of prosecution preparation following the suspects’ remand in custody.
