Warsaw police arrest Ukrainian suspect tied to Romania arson
A European arrest warrant sets up possible extradition to Bucharest.
Polish police in Warsaw have arrested a 25-year-old Ukrainian man suspected of reconnaissance work for arson attacks in Romania.
Central Bureau of Investigation officers detained Artem S. and said he is linked to a sabotage group allegedly acting in Russia’s interest. The arrest follows accusations connected to a fire at the state defence company Romarm in Brasov.
According to reporting by RMF FM, Artem S. was one of three members of the group. Investigators accuse them of setting the fire at Romarm in Brasov, central Romania, in mid-September, when flames damaged premises covering 1,000 square meters.
Police allege the Ukrainian suspect’s role was to identify the target object and pay for the operation. Romanian intelligence also said he worked with two Belarusian men, who were later arrested in Germany.
In Warsaw, investigators from the police’s counter-terrorism department entered the suspect’s home in the Ursus district, where they arrested him.
Artem S. now faces extradition to Bucharest based on a European arrest warrant. His legal status is under the next steps of that process after the arrest.
