An 87-year-old woman was attacked by an unknown man in Vienna’s 16th district after leaving a bank with a higher cash withdrawal. The incident happened on 23 October 2026 at around 19:00. The victim had withdrawn more money from a bank branch and then took public transport home. As she tried to unlock her front door, the attacker grabbed her from behind and put her in a chokehold. He attempted to snatch her cross-body bag, and a struggle broke out. The woman fell to the ground and suffered injuries. The suspect then fled with the stolen handbag. Police launched a prompt search, but it did not succeed in locating the man. Investigations are ongoing. Vienna police also issued prevention tips, including withdrawing cash in bank foyers, asking for larger amounts in a separate room, and getting a relative or trusted person to accompany you to and from the bank. People are urged to watch for suspicious individuals and call police at 133 if someone feels unsafe.
