US detains Álvaro Pulido accused of laundering over $2bn
The 62-year-old is arrested during a Homeland Security Task Force operation and heads to court Tuesday.
A 62-year-old man, Álvaro Pulido, has been detained in the United States over indictments accusing him of laundering more than $2bn linked to Venezuelan bribery schemes.
US officials say Pulido was arrested during a Homeland Security Task Force operation on Sunday. The US Department of Justice previously offered a $10m reward for information leading to his arrest.
Pulido had been jailed in Venezuela since March 2023. US prosecutors allege he diverted profits connected to Venezuela’s state-run oil company PDVSA.
According to the US Attorney’s Office, Pulido faces two separate federal indictments involving the alleged laundering of more than $2bn in connection with Venezuelan government bribery schemes.
Prosecutors say Pulido, along with four co-defendants, bribed Venezuelan government officials to secure contracts to provide poor Venezuelans with food and medicine. They allege he overcharged the Venezuelan government and moved the profits through bank accounts abroad, including in the US.
They also allege Pulido worked with Alex Saab to launder $350m from a separate bribery scheme tied to Venezuela’s currency exchange system, using bank accounts in Florida.
Pulido is due to appear in court on Tuesday. The case is at the federal stage following his arrest, with charges tied to the two indictments mentioned by the US Attorney’s Office.
