A 34-year-old man was arrested after allegedly using an emergency hammer to threaten passengers on a Vienna bus and smashing a glass panel at a stop. The incident happened on 30 October 2026 at around 13:30 on the Wien-Wieden route, when witnesses said the man loudly shouted around the bus without an apparent reason. He allegedly ripped the emergency hammer from its mount and threatened several passengers. When the bus stopped at the Mommsengasse station, the man allegedly got off, used the hammer to damage the glass of the bus stop shelter, and then fled. The bus driver and several passengers gave police a clear escape direction and a description of the suspect. Officers were able to stop the suspect in the top floor corridor of a nearby multi-tenant building. During the arrest, the man had several cut injuries on his hands. After medical care from the rescue service, he was taken to a hospital for further treatment. The emergency hammer was later found in the area of the damaged bus stop. The man was taken into custody on a provisional basis. Prosecutors in Vienna ordered that after questioning, he be reported on the case while released on his own terms.
