Vienna police have arrested a 19-year-old after a dangerous escape during a traffic check in the city late on 2 November. Officers from the State Traffic Department spotted a car in poor condition on Laxenburger Straße and signalled the driver to stop with follow-up horn and flashing lights. Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated hard, continued past the intersection at Laxenburger Straße and Südtiroler Platz, and fled. The chase then carried on across several Vienna districts, including the 10th, 3rd, 1st, 10th and 11th, with additional radio support called in. During the flight, police recorded speeds of up to 165 km/h and 160 km/h in areas where 50 km/h is allowed. Officers said the driver also ran multiple intersections at red lights. His driving behaviour, including parts of the wrong-direction lane without headlights while travelling at high speed, put other road users in danger. Several drivers had to brake abruptly, and pedestrians were forced to jump aside to avoid a collision. The pursuit ended near Seeschlachtweg when the driver turned into a one-way street and brought the vehicle to a stop. Because he remained highly uncooperative, police had to use physical force to get him out of the car. During the arrest, he tried several times to resist and to break free. The suspect is a 19-year-old man from Syria listed as already known to authorities. Police say he has no valid driving licence. He was taken into provisional custody, and the vehicle was provisionally seized. Police have filed both criminal and administrative offence reports, with 60 reports issued in total. The matter remains under investigation.
