Police in Vienna detain five over alleged misuse of pyrotechnics
Hundreds of officers were deployed across the city during the late-October rally period.
Vienna police temporarily detained five suspects after alleged clashes linked to the city center assembly and the use of unlawful pyrotechnics.
Several hundred police officers were deployed across Vienna from 31 October 2026 to 1 November 2026 to maintain public order and safety during the gathering in the inner city.
Most police actions were connected to the alleged misuse of pyrotechnics. Police said that, in isolated cases, criminal acts occurred. Five suspects were placed in provisional detention on suspicion of resistance to authorities and suspected property damage.
One of the suspects is said to have tried to damage a parked police vehicle using a flammable liquid.
According to police, officers prevented the situation from escalating into more serious safety incidents. Follow-up measures were set to continue in the hours after the operation was temporarily concluded.
