Masked protesters halt near Vienna universities after hand injury to officer
Six people were detained after 20 were spotted disguised during the march on 22 October 2026.
Police in Vienna detained six people after 20 masked participants were spotted during a large demonstration near the Universitätsring.
The events took place on 22 October 2026, starting at the Resselpark. The crowd then marched against the direction of travel via the Ring to the Universitätsring for the final rally, according to Austria Vienna Police.
The demonstration drew tens of thousands of participants. Police officers in uniform and in plain clothes, supported by technical means including drones, accompanied the event throughout. Authorities reported no major incidents and said the planned preventive measures were carried out, keeping the programme disturbance-free for most of the day.
Around 18:00, police observed about 20 people wearing disguises. Six of them were stopped because of suspected breaches of the prohibition on disguising in an assembly under Section 9, Paragraph 1, item 1 of the Assembly Act. During the stop, a police officer was injured on the hand by an unknown perpetrator, and the officer could not continue their duty. Police described the injury, based on current information, as a swelling.
A criminal report was filed, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrator.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said the operation was prepared in detail and carried out professionally, and he thanked both officers and the people affected by delays in road traffic.
Latest status: Six people were detained over suspected violations of the disguise ban, and police investigations into the officer’s hand injury are continuing.
