Six drivers had their licences temporarily taken in Vienna after police ran targeted road checks focused on speed and drink-driving. The operations took place on 6 November 2026 in Vienna’s city area, where officers found numerous offences. Five drivers were measured at well above the speed limits. Four were recorded at 80 km/h zones, driving at 131 km/h, 149 km/h, 150 km/h and 152 km/h. A fifth driver was clocked at 102 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. All five had their licences provisionally withdrawn. On the West Autobahn (A1) near Penzing, police also recorded a driver travelling at 161 km/h in a 70 km/h area. After subtracting the legal measurement tolerance, the over-speed amounted to 82 km/h, and the reading came from a mobile radar vehicle. The case could lead to a licence withdrawal procedure and the vehicle being confiscated. Police removed another driver from traffic after an alcohol test showed 0.9 promille. His licence was also provisionally taken. During the traffic focus, police logged additional offences and measures, including four reports for avoidable popping and bang noises from exhaust systems, four licence plate seizures for missing compulsory motor insurance, and a provisional plate seizure for ignoring a 72-hour driving break requirement. There were also reports for driving with an unsafe distance of under 0.2 seconds, driving without a valid driving licence, ignoring a stop sign, and driving despite poor physical condition. In total, officers carried out 20 alcohol screening tests and one breathalyser test. In one case, they collected a security payment of 1,500 euros. The police said further targeted traffic operations will continue to keep roads safe.
