Vietnam arrests seven suspected money laundering suspects over voice phishing
Police link the alleged laundering to $9.5 million taken via fake bank websites.
Vietnamese authorities arrested a group of seven people suspected of money laundering, using information provided by Japanese police, Japan's National Police Agency said.
The arrests followed an investigation that began after a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman was arrested and indicted in Japan. The seven suspects are accused of laundering money obtained through voice phishing between 2024 and last year, with the laundered amount reportedly worth about $9.5 million.
In voice phishing, scammers impersonate officials of financial organizations the victim actually deals with and direct them to a fake website to hand over account information.
The National Police Agency said it plans to investigate in coordination with Vietnamese authorities the likely client of the money laundering group, who is suspected of carrying out the voice phishing.
The suspects were arrested by Vietnamese authorities, while the investigation involving the likely client is set to continue with joint coordination between Japan and Vietnam.
