Thousands of protesters in Albania have clashed with riot police in Tirana, as anger over a luxury resort project backed by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner drives calls for Prime Minister Edi Rama to step down. The demonstrations, largely led by students, entered their fourth consecutive day on Friday. Protesters smashed windows, damaged traffic lights and fought running battles with riot police in the capital. Earlier on Thursday, the situation turned violent when protesters set fire to a government building and two banks. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons. After the clashes, police detained 160 people. The unrest then spread to other cities including Lezha, Elbasan and Korca. Reuters reported the protests began over plans to develop parts of Albania’s coastline into a luxury tourist destination that has faced legal challenges and opposition from local residents. Protesters also accused Rama’s government of corruption, complained about rising education costs and said their demands have been ignored despite months of peaceful demonstrations. A 19-year-old protester, identified as Klea, told Reuters the peaceful campaign had lasted 140 days. Rama has refused to step down and accused unnamed foreign groups of encouraging the violence. Villagers alleged that their land was wrongfully sold for the resort development. Reuters reported it found no evidence of wrongdoing by Kushner, who was not directly involved in the villagers’ land dispute. The latest update has police holding 160 people following Thursday’s clashes as the protests continue into a fourth day.
