Waadt police have arrested a 16-year-old suspected of breaking into an education IT support platform and stealing data. The Cybercrime Department of the Vaud Cantonal Police took the teenager into custody on 31 October 2026 after investigators linked him to an alleged intrusion at the end of October. The alleged unapproved access took place between 23 October and 26 October 2026. Targeted was an IT support platform used by upper secondary education institutions in the canton, including gymnasiums and vocational schools. The General Directorate for Post-Compulsory Education (DGEP) detected the incident on 26 October and filed a criminal complaint. The platform supports around 38,000 students and 3,500 teachers, who request technical help for their schools. Authorities say the stored data includes users’ names, first names and school email addresses, as well as the content of support requests. Passwords and school information such as grades or student files are not kept on the platform, according to the authorities. Investigators also say it is still under investigation whether data was downloaded or passed on to third parties. Immediately after the incident was discovered, the platform was disconnected from the internet and additional security measures were put in place with support from the canton’s Security Response Centre. Affected students and teachers were informed. Police and organisers urged people to be particularly cautious of possible fraudulent messages. Because of the ongoing investigations, the suspect was identified quickly. Police seized his IT equipment, which is now being evaluated. The case is being handled by the cybercrime unit of the cantonal police, under the leadership of the youth court. After his questioning, the teenager was released. The proceedings before the youth court are still pending.
