A violent mob attacked police during an illegal party at Zurich’s Hardplatz, leaving at least one officer injured and causing massive damage. Police in Zurich received the first report shortly after 23:00 on Sunday, October 11. The party was initially tolerated, but officers moved to end it after reports of damage to building facades and vehicles, bottle explosions, and harassment of residents. When police tried to clear the area, a group of more than 100 people, some of them masked, refused to leave. Officers repeatedly ordered the crowd to leave the Hardplatz and the barred underpass within ten minutes. Instead, police were attacked with glass bottles and paving stones. Because of the violence, officers had to withdraw. Another group then shot rockets at the police. The city police said protective equipment helped prevent serious injuries. To regain control, the police used tear gas, water cannons and rubber shotgun rounds. During the later phase of the operation, officers were again heavily endangered and attacked with paving stones and rockets. Police said the “chaotic” group blocked streets, set around two dozen containers on fire, and threw paving stones and glass bottles at officers. By about 03:00, the city police brought the situation under control using coercive measures. After the operation, a police officer was reported injured, and several police vehicles were badly damaged, with some vehicles suffering total loss. Fire services were also deployed to put out the fires. Investigations into further damage and the total cost are ongoing. The case status is an active police investigation, with the latest confirmed update that an officer was injured and vehicle damage is under assessment.
