72-year-old accused after 24-year-old dies from carbon monoxide in Zvolen
Police charged the man with causing death through negligence after tests linked the cause to a faulty heater.
A 24-year-old man died after an acute carbon monoxide poisoning at a block of flats on Alexyho Street in Zvolen, and police have charged a 72-year-old man in connection with the case.
Police found the victim’s body inside one of the apartments on 1 January. During the investigation, officers also responded with firefighters to a separate incident in March, when measurements in the same building showed raised levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, leading to the evacuation of the residents.
After evaluating evidence, police concluded that the 24-year-old died due to acute poisoning by carbon monoxide. Experts identified the cause inside the building as neglect in the maintenance of a flow-through water heater.
In connection with the case, the police brought a charge against the 72-year-old man for the offence of causing death through negligence. The investigation involved forensic experts from the field of forensic medicine and specialists from the Criminal and Expert Institute in Slovenska L’upča.
Police urged the public not to underestimate regular checks and professional maintenance of gas appliances, flow-through water heaters, boilers and chimneys, and called for proper ventilation. They also recommended installing a working carbon monoxide detector.
