Two people were arrested in Almere on suspicion of money laundering involving millions of euros and mortgage fraud, Dutch fiscal investigators said. A 45-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman were taken into custody after the Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD) launched a probe based on unusual bank transactions. Investigators started after the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) flagged suspicious money flows in the suspects’ accounts. The FIOD said encrypted communication via a Sky ECC account played a key role in the investigation into the 45-year-old man, whom investigators suspect was involved in laundering millions of euros. The 43-year-old woman was suspected of laundering money and committing mortgage fraud by allegedly giving false salary and income details on her mortgage application, which investigators say allowed her to obtain a mortgage despite having no income. The FIOD said the monthly payments were allegedly made using money derived from criminal activity. During searches of two homes in Almere, investigators seized the woman’s property, the FIOD announced. The investigation is ongoing, with the two suspects arrested as part of the money laundering and mortgage fraud probe.
