59 charged in Greece over €100 million Horiatiko bakery tax fraud
Prosecutors accuse a network of front companies, forgery and money laundering.
Greek authorities have charged 59 people over an alleged €100 million tax fraud tied to the Horiatiko bakery chain.
The suspects include the owner of the chain, who faces allegations ranging from fraud against the state and tax evasion to belonging to a criminal organization. Prosecutors also cite forgery and money laundering, with claims involving more than €120,000 in fraud against the state and over €150,000 in tax evasion.
Among the wider accusations, several defendants have also been charged with sex-trafficking, robbery, fraud, and non-payment of social security contributions.
Investigators say the alleged ringleader not only ran the bakery chain but also owned nightlife businesses and restaurants across Athens’ southern suburbs and on party islands including Mykonos, Rhodes and Zakynthos.
The investigation focused on more than 200 bakeries and other establishments and a total of 460 front companies. Authorities allege the companies were mostly nominally run by people paid up to €1,000 a month to act as screens for the main suspect.
During the probe, authorities sequestered around €6 million from bank accounts linked to the main suspect and seized an additional €250,000 in cash found during raids. Late Monday, the accused were formally brought before the criminal justice process.
The case is currently at the charging stage, with the investigation ongoing and the defendants facing the listed criminal charges in Greece.
