Amsterdam police arrest suspect after body found in suitcase
The 23-year-old was detained after Hajar’s death was linked to criminal activity.
Amsterdam police have arrested a 23-year-old suspect after the body of Hajar, a 29-year-old Moroccan woman, was found in a suitcase in the waters near Amsteldijk.
Police said Hajar was reported missing on 4 October and was found dead on 16 October near the rue Amsteldijk. Investigators confirmed the death had an alleged criminal origin.
Dutch media reported that Hajar was last seen on 4 October near the RAI exhibition center in Amsterdam, cycling with a man whose identity was unknown at the start of the probe. A family member reported her missing the same day, fearing for her safety, and police later published her photograph on 13 October after early searches failed to find her.
On the morning of 16 October, a passer-by discovered a suitcase in the water, containing the body. That find triggered a major investigation into how and where she died.
Police previously treated the man shown with Hajar on CCTV near the exhibition center as a witness. Further investigation later led them to suspect he was linked to her death.
The suspect was arrested on 20 October in Spierdijk, after an intervention at a home following reports of violence. A wounded man was found there and taken to hospital. Police confirmed the suspect remained in custody, with limited communication rights allowing contact only with his legal counsel.
Investigators then said they had identified a building on De Cuserstraat in Buitenveldert, where Hajar was believed to have lost her life. The public prosecutor suspects the suspect of murder or manslaughter and of hiding the body. Authorities also pursued suspicions of violence against the man he had previously taken care of. The investigation is ongoing and no final conclusions on a motive or the nature of the relationship have been announced.
