Guardia Civil detains four over copper cable thefts in Leon
Police recovered 2,460 kilos of industrial cable and put suspects before a court in La Baneza.
Four people have been detained and a fifth investigated after a suspected copper cable theft ring struck multiple locations across the province of Leon, Spanish police said.
The Guardia Civil said the operation, dubbed Roquedal, uncovered crimes in six towns, including Cubillos del Sil, Carracedelo and Benuza. Police recovered 2,460 kilos of industrial electrical cable stolen from a Leon company, with damages reported at more than 500,000 euros.
Investigators say the group allegedly committed forced entry robberies targeting businesses and industrial sites, electricity generation facilities, quarries and mining operations, often in remote areas away from population centres.
Police began the investigation in August after a cable raid in Cubillos del Sil. Early steps allowed investigators to identify one alleged participant and link them to other offences.
According to the Guardia Civil, the alleged group included at least five people from the Community of Madrid. Investigators said the suspects moved between locations with high mobility, using rented vehicles and other “shuttle” cars to check for police surveillance, and they carried out surveillance and counter-surveillance.
The Guardia Civil connected the suspects to thefts in Cubillos del Sil, Veldedo, La Baneza, Carracedelo, Robledo de Losada and Benuza. The investigation has resulted so far in four arrests and the recovery of the stolen cable. The case remains open to identify any additional suspects.
The detainees and case files were placed before Court of First Instance and Investigation No. 1 in La Baneza.
