Clacton man sentenced after selling access to illegal streaming platforms
Aaron Smith sold access to more than 540 people and laundered over £72,000.
A Clacton man has been sentenced after selling access to illegal streaming platforms through Fire TV sticks, with payments totalling more than £72,000.
Aaron Smith, 41, of Point Clear Road in St Osyth, sold access to the services to more than 540 people, charging annual fees to maintain the access he gave customers.
Essex Police said Smith was sent a cease-and-desist letter in 2023 along with other identified users warning him of the criminal offences involved in using illegal streaming services. He ignored the warning, and the subsequent investigation found he was supplying hundreds of people with access.
Smith was arrested in Clacton in December 2024. Officers carried out a warrant at his home and seized his laptop and phone. Messages recovered from his phone showed he was advertising the devices for sale as early as October 2020, while the laptop contained conversations about selling the sticks.
Hundreds of payments linked to the devices were made into Smiths bank accounts, totalling more than £72,000. A Freezing Order was put in place to freeze money Essex Police believed represented criminal property.
Smith pleaded guilty to money laundering and the sale or hire of an article infringing copyright in July at Chelmsford Crown Court. This month, he was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years.
Detective Sergeant Mike Monkton of Essex Police Proactive Money Laundering Team said the evidence showed Smith put himself at the centre of a criminal enterprise and that the financial cost to rights holders is vast.
He remains sentenced following the court outcome at Chelmsford Crown Court.
