Police seize 36kg of drugs in buried barrels in Riga forests
Seven people linked to a Latvian-Lithuanian network were arrested after raids.
Latvian police detained a Latvian and Lithuanian group accused of hiding drugs in buried barrels in forests around Riga, with a haul of about 36 kilograms seized.
The investigation began on 14 October into illegal drug trafficking organised by a group.
During large-scale operational activities, police identified eight suspects linked to the case. On 21 October, officers arrested six people during the operation. Three tried to flee but were detained.
Police carried out 10 searches in total, including six at suspects' homes, three at vehicles and one at a place of detention, as well as searches of forest areas.
As a result, officers found around 36 kilograms of various drugs, including amfetamine, marihuana, cocaine, haschish, Subutex tablets, Quetiapine Accord tablets, clonazepam tablets, and MDMA tablets. Police also confiscated 34 devices containing THC from psychoactive cannabis plants.
The drugs were mostly located in the forest, buried in barrels. Riga police said it is the first time such a large quantity of drugs hidden in the forest has been detected in the region.
Investigators also seized 17 mobile phones, including three taken from people held in custody, and one tablet, as well as fake identity documents.
Five people were ordered into pre-trial detention by a court on 23 October, including four Lithuanian citizens and one Latvian citizen.
Police said their work continues to clarify all circumstances and identify any other people linked to the offence.
