A police raid in the Vesdre-Gueule zone has led to the arrest of a couple suspected of around 40 cemetery thefts in Eupen and Kettenis, L’Avenir reports. Police carried out the search on Monday morning, taking in a man and a woman aged 35 to 40. Prosecutor Andréa Tilgenkamp said the suspected offences took place over several months, with investigators compiling “a quarantaine de dossiers” for these two suspects. The alleged thefts targeted two cemeteries, including the cemetery in Eupen and the one in Kettenis. Objects allegedly stolen repeatedly include vases, lanterns and sculptures. While the exact amount of the damage is still being worked out, Tilgenkamp said the harm is “quite significant, financial but also emotional” for the families of the deceased. The prosecutor also noted that the two suspects were already known to the justice system, with prior records involving drugs-related offences and various types of fraud. After police placed the couple in custody, they will be presented to an examining judge, who will decide what happens next in the case.
