Two carabinieri in service in Desenzano del Garda were arrested and put in pre-trial custody after prosecutors accused them of stealing jewellery and other valuables from homes while on duty. The defendants, appointments Alessandro Zanetti and Valentino Stia, were already under investigation. Prosecutors say they took advantage of their service role to access private residences and remove precious items. Investigators also allege involvement of the girlfriend of one of the two soldiers. She is accused of providing logistical and operational support for selling the stolen goods, including placing the jewellery in several local second-hand gold buying shops. The probe was launched by colleagues within the Carabinieri, after initial suspicions emerged and internal checks were carried out. The pre-trial custody order was requested by the substitute prosecutor Claudia Moregola and issued following those investigations. The latest confirmed status is that both carabinieri are under custody in prison, facing accusations related to the thefts; the case remains under investigation with the girlfriend also accused of supporting the sale of the stolen jewellery.
