Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said her party supports an ongoing money laundering investigation into a charity chaired by a party TD. The probe centres on Liberty Recycling Training And Development CLG, a Dublin-based charity chaired by Aengus Ó Snodaigh. Gardaí have conducted wide-ranging searches across Dublin and other counties, targeting locations where detectives seized two BMW X5 cars, watches and designer bags during the operation. Detectives from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau’s money laundering investigation unit led the searches, carrying out search warrants in locations across Dublin and eastern and southern regions on Tuesday and Wednesday. A garda spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing. No one was arrested by gardaí. McDonald said that if wrongdoing is uncovered, there must be consequences. She added that Sinn Féin has not been contacted by gardaí about Ó Snodaigh, and there is no suggestion of wrongdoing on his behalf. The Charities Regulator said it is engaging with the charity’s trustees, but cannot comment further because there is an active Garda investigation. Liberty Recycling Training And Development CLG, based at Bluebell Industrial Estate in Dublin 12, was founded in 2001, with Ó Snodaigh among four founding board members. Its latest financial report lists principal activity as the collection of second-hand clothing and reselling outside the EU and in Ireland, and rehabilitation of drug users through work and training. For the financial year ending December 2024, the company reported total income of €3,633,263 and expenditure of €3,980,895. It also received a Community Employment grant of €487,213 from the Department of Social Protection to support and integrate people in drug rehabilitation. Investigations remain ongoing, with Gardaí continuing work and the Charities Regulator engaging with the trustees.
