Dmitro Svjataш, a former Ukrainian People’s Deputy convicted in Ukraine and wanted over allegations tied to alleged Russia support and large-scale financial fraud, was detained by police at the Swedish border, after arriving for a Stevie Wonder concert. His lawyer, Mark Safaryan, said Svjataш was stopped at passport control. The former lawmaker showed a Ukrainian passport even though he holds Russian citizenship. According to his defence, police relied on a Polish entry ban recorded in the Schengen database from September 2026. Safaryan described Svjataш as “one of the most wanted” people in Ukraine. Svjataш is being held at a Swedish Migration Board detention centre in Märsta, near Stockholm. His lawyers have filed an appeal, arguing the detention decision is disproportionate. Before the Swedish detention, Svjataш was tried in Ukraine. He was sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison over charges including alleged justifying aggression and fraud involving more than 2.2 billion hryvnias. His legal team is challenging the ruling at the Kyiv appellate court. The case also includes proceedings related to the nationalisation of arrested assets worth around 600 million hryvnias, under ARMA control. The latest status in Sweden is ongoing detention at the Märsta facility while the appeal is pending.
