Carabinieri catch a fake maresciallo in Gazzada, arrest 20-year-old
The alleged scam targeted two 86-year-old couples, with gold jewellery recovered.
Carabinieri arrested a 20-year-old man in Gazzada while he was allegedly in the middle of handing over gold valuables to two elderly victims after impersonating a carabinieri officer.
Police moved in at lunchtime after a phone scam convinced the 86-year-old couple to gather their jewellery and wait for an official inspection. The suspect had claimed there was an invented carabinieri operation and that a document belonging to the woman had been found.
According to the account, the fake “maresciallo” told the victims to assemble all the precious items in their home, saying a supposed court official would arrive soon to carry out checks. Carabinieri interrupted the handover in real time.
Officers stopped the young man as he received a bundle of valuables filled with gold items including necklaces, bracelets, rings and watches. They seized three mobile phones found in his possession, which will be used in the investigation.
The operation led to the immediate recovery and return of all the precious items to the victims. After the formalities of arrest, the accused was taken to the prison in Varese, pending a “direttissima” hearing.
