Police in western Athens arrested a suspected key member of a migrant-smuggling gang after raiding a workshop where he allegedly produced fake identity papers. The 61-year-old foreign national was taken into custody on Thursday at a workshop in Aigaleo, a suburb of Athens. Greek police said he faces charges including forgery and immigration law breaches. Investigators allege the gang smuggled people into Greece and then used forged documents to help them continue into the European Union. Police said the people were brought from Turkey and Iraq to the EU via North Macedonia, then either crossed into Greece with fake papers provided to them there, or the forged documents were sent on through North Macedonia. Police said the suspect produced high quality fakes, including visa stickers for the Schengen area, the passport-free travel zone in much of Europe. He allegedly charged up to €900 per forged document, while the gang made an estimated €8,000 for every migrant smuggled to Europe. The investigation remains ongoing, with the suspect held after his arrest and charged over the alleged forgery and immigration offences.
