Police arrest 2 men for fake carabinieri call robbery in Lequile
An 86-year-old was tricked into handing over jewellery, seized on Surbo tangenziale.
Two men were arrested in Lequile, in Italy, after allegedly posing as carabinieri to rob an 86-year-old woman of jewellery.
Carabinieri say the victim received a phone call from unknown people who claimed her son had been arrested. To prevent him going to jail, she was told to hand over valuable items kept at home, and she was led to collect jewellery and other valuables while waiting for “officers” to arrive.
Investigators say the scam was designed to stop the woman from verifying what she was being told. The plan began to unravel when her 32-year-old grandson arrived at the home while the robbery was under way.
He noticed an unfamiliar car nearby, went inside, and the two men fled. They had already taken jewellery worth a few hundred euros. The grandson later described the car and immediately called 112, triggering searches by carabinieri units from the Nucleo operativo e radiomobile of the Lecce Carabinieri Command and the Stazione di Lequile.
The suspects were intercepted along the tangenziale near the Surbo area and all the stolen jewellery was recovered. Paolo Romano, 58, and Giuseppe Morrone, 30, were arrested and taken to Lecce prison on orders from the judicial authority, accused of robbery through deception.
