French police arrest 1,314 during mass protests as 70,000 deploy
Officials report 75 fires, 24 looted shops, and clashes including tear gas and stun grenades.
French police arrested 1,314 people as mass protests surged into a second weekend, with 70,000 officers deployed across the country, Tehran Times reported.
Interior Ministry figures said the detentions rose from nearly 1,000 to 1,314, with authorities also citing 75 fires and 24 looted shops during Saturday’s marches.
The Interior Ministry said there were 410,000 marchers nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris, while unions and activists claimed the true figure was close to double.
Police sealed off city centers and defended the crackdown by saying demonstrators were barred from staging unauthorized marches or entering city areas. Authorities had already banned non-union demonstrations they called “illegitimate.”
In Paris, the march was mostly calm, with brass bands and grandparents walking alongside students. Violence broke out at Porte de Vincennes, where masked groups threw bottles and stones. Police responded with tear gas, water cannon and stun grenades, then charged into a wider crowd with batons.
Tear gas was also used to keep demonstrators out of city centers in Lyon, Lille, Montpellier, Nantes and Toulouse. Two people were seriously hurt in Clermont-Ferrand and Toulouse, with one reportedly losing fingers. French authorities said investigations are underway into children and other protesters maimed by explosive police weapons.
Authorities also described arrests in other cities. In Nice, prosecutors said 59 people were taken into custody, 11 suspected of extreme-right affiliation, after they were stopped in vehicles carrying masks, gloves, gas sprays and truncheons.
Separately, the unrest was followed by government plans to disrupt social media during “urban violence.” Two days before the march, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu wrote to major telecom operators asking them to be ready to block TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and X, and to suspend access if needed.
As the second weekend continues, police actions and investigations are under way following the arrests and injuries.
