French police detain 511 people during protests nationwide
Interior ministry says around 320,000 people attended and 40,000 checks were carried out.
French police detained 511 people during protests across the country, the Interior Ministry said.
The demonstrations drew about 320,000 people, with unions claiming the figure was closer to 500,000. Police reported clashes in several cities, including Paris, Lyon, Rennes, Marseille and Toulouse.
In Paris, the march started around 14:00 from Bagnolet Gate and moved toward Charenton Gate. Protesters chanted slogans including “We want a general strike” and “The streets are ours”, and carried banners about school funding, living conditions, freedom and rising racism.
Some participants wore comic characters’ costumes for Halloween, while others marched in solidarity with the people of Gaza, carrying keffiyehs and Palestinian flags. A police helicopter flew patrols along the route. Despite a ban, another group also marched near the Bastille Square, mainly made up of students.
When crowds gathered around Charenton Gate, police used tear gas. Protesters threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at officers. Media reports said a police officer’s uniform caught fire and he suffered serious burns to his foot. Police prevented the group from reaching Bastille Square for hours.
In Rennes, police used tear gas and batons, and videos showing two officers striking a protester with batons spread online. In Lyon, officers responded with tear gas after protesters threw objects at police. In Marseille, masked individuals allegedly threw stones and glass bottles at officers, who also used tear gas. The report also mentions police intervention after some people entered an kindergarten without permission.
Toulouse saw police move to disperse an unauthorized protest using tear gas and water cannon.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said some groups caused damage and were involved in looting, and that officers faced violent attacks. He said the day included around 40,000 checks, and described a case of a Molotov cocktail being thrown at a police officer as an attempted killing.
The latest confirmed status is that 511 people were detained during the protest period, with police operations and checks carried out nationwide.
