Two people were arrested over suspected fraud targeting older residents in Cervinara, police said. In a coordinated operation led by the Cervinara public security office, with the Avellino public prosecutor, the judge ordered house arrest with remote control using electronic bracelets. The measures were issued after the GIP accepted the prosecutor’s request. The first case dates to 24 September 2026 and allegedly targeted a elderly woman living in Cervinara. Investigators said she received a phone call from a fake director of the local post office, warning her of a serious financial problem affecting her grandson. Believing the story, the victim handed over valuable items to a man posing as a postal office worker. Investigators carried out info-investigative activity and proof checks to reconstruct the episode and identify the two accused. In related activity, the Avellino Mobile Squad arrested two young men from Naples, aged 22 and 20, with no criminal records. They are accused in a separate fraud reported in Bitonto, in which they allegedly presented themselves at a 76-year-old woman’s home as carabinieri and, through deception, obtained multiple gold items and 1,460 euros in banknotes of different denominations. Police later intercepted the getaway car on the A16 Naples-Bari motorway at km 34 in the direction of Naples, in the municipality of Monteforte Irpino. After the stop, officers searched the driver and found 1,460 euros and various gold items on him. The money and items were seized and recognized by the victim. The two suspects were arrested and, at the request of the public prosecutor on duty, transferred to the Casa Circondariale “A. Graziano” pending the validation hearing. The charges are described as provisional, and the measures are subject to appeal.
