German police detain a suspect after fire at Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest
Firefighters battled difficult access at the 1,834-meter site, police say.
German police have detained a person suspected of being involved in a fire at Hitler’s former mountain home, the Eagle’s Nest, in Bavaria.
Police said rescue crews were called to the blaze on Friday at 21:52. According to a police spokeswoman Lisa Maier, firefighters had problems putting out the fire because the object sits in a hard-to-reach location at 1,834 meters above sea level.
The incident, which damaged the entire building, is under investigation. The Eagle’s Nest is located in the Bavarian Alps and is now one of the most visited tourist attractions in Upper Bavaria, with around 300,000 visitors each year.
The site offers panoramic views over the Berchtesgaden Alps, including peaks such as Hoher Göll and Watzmann, and views toward the Königssee. A nearby museum, the Documentation Obersalzberg, focuses on the history of National Socialism.
In winter months, the Eagle’s Nest is typically closed to the public from November to April. The latest update is that police have the suspected person in custody as the investigation continues into the fire’s circumstances.
