India arrests ‘cockroach party’ leader on flight to Delhi ahead of planned protest
Police boarded the plane in the capital before he and two other leaders could land.
Police in India arrested Abhijeet Dipke, described in the report as the leader of the so-called “cockroach party” and a driving force behind a student revolt, before he was able to arrive in New Delhi.
Dipke and two other leaders were taken into custody before they disembarked from a flight bound for the capital. The arrests came before a planned demonstration that the report says Dipke had called for, described as non-authorized, with the aim of demanding the resignation of the president of the Election Commission.
Speaking at the time of the arrest, Dipke said police from Delhi had boarded the aircraft to arrest them. He also argued that they had come specifically to be arrested.
The report does not provide further details about charges, the legal process, or any evidence. Being arrested means police detained a person; it does not mean guilt has been proven in court.
