Kosovo police investigate axe killing of Arlinda Zekaj
She had repeatedly sought protection days before her death, after threats were reported.
Thousands of people protested in Kosovo after the killing of 49-year-old Arlinda Zekaj in the village of Vitomirica near Peja, western Kosovo.
Zekaj had contacted police multiple times about threats from her husband and his family. On October 25, her husband was detained after she complained again and asked for protection from relatives.
Police drove her home after the complaint, and at 20:58 she got out of the patrol car. An emergency call followed, and by 21:10 law enforcement found her body in her bedroom. Deutsche Welle reports she was killed with an axe.
Activists later protested in Pristina, pouring red paint near the government building and unfurling a banner reading, “The state killed Arlinda.” On November 1, demonstrators demanded accountability from police officers and prosecutors who handled Zekaj’s complaints, and they called for the resignation of Interior Minister Xhelal Sveçla and Justice Minister Donika Gërvalla.
After the killing, Zekaj’s alleged attacker, Albert Silaj, the brother of her husband, fled. Police detained him near Peja on October 27 and are investigating him on suspicion of murder.
Earlier, a court in Peja had issued a protection order that granted Zekaj temporary custody of her son. It also allowed her to stay in the family home and set conditions requiring her husband to keep distance from her, including staying at least two metres away inside and 20 metres away outside the home.
The latest status is that Silaj has been detained and is being investigated on suspicion of murder, while several senior police officials and a prosecutor involved in Zekaj’s complaints were suspended from work.
