Police have arrested a 34-year-old man near Limoges as part of the investigation into the fire that destroyed part of the town hall (hôtel de ville) on 17 October. The suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday morning in Val-d’Issoire, in the Haute-Vienne area. The RAID unit carried out the intervention at dawn at an isolated home in the Bussière-Boffy hamlet. The man is known to police and intelligence services and is listed as fiché S for his links to the ultraleft movement. Investigators from the anti-terrorism sub-directorate are handling the case together with local police. Authorities say they believe he did not act alone. A RAID operation and early case sources have identified his profile soon after the arrest. The suspect, a carpenter by profession, has previous convictions connected to violence against a police officer during a demonstration in Guéret over the Biosyl pellet plant project. He was first acquitted in 2025, then received a one-year prison sentence with a suspended term on appeal, before pursuing an appeal to the Cour de cassation. The investigation also focuses on his family. His father, described as a long-time far-left activist in Limousin, has been convicted for destroying telecommunications equipment tied to the 5G issue, including antennas at Les Cars in 2021, and for the 2020 burning of Enedis vehicles. He was sentenced to three years in prison with a suspended term. A co-defendant, a 55-year-old woman tried in the same case, received two years with a suspended term. The latest stage is the ongoing investigation, with the man arrested during the RAID operation in Val-d’Issoire.
