Sonny Redmond to be extradited from Merseyside to Spain
The 33-year-old consents to extradition after a Liverpool case was dropped.
Merseyside gangster Sonny Redmond is set to be extradited to Spain after consenting to the move at a final hearing in London.
Redmond, 33, formerly of Bootle, was due to stand trial in Liverpool for being in possession of a knife and phone while serving a previous sentence in HMP Liverpool. But the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case.
While in custody, Redmond was arrested in connection with a Spanish arrest warrant. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 11, with a final extradition hearing held on October 26.
At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Redmond consented to his extradition to Spain and it was not contested.
The warrant is believed to have been issued after Redmond allegedly broke his bail conditions by leaving the country. Police had previously said he had been arrested in June while in custody for an unrelated matter and was remanded in custody to return to court later.
Before the extradition decision, Redmond had been linked to a botched car park shooting in Spain. He survived after a gunman sprayed more than a dozen bullets at his vehicle in an underground garage in Orihuela Costa on December 11 last year. Images widely shared in Spain showed the windscreen riddled with bullet holes, and he was taken for emergency surgery.
The Spanish press identified Redmond as one of two British men arrested over an armed robbery at a cannabis club, with the investigation still ongoing.
His extradition status is now confirmed, with Redmond consenting after the court hearing on October 26.
