A fake diplomat alarm has been triggered at Munich Airport after police detained two Iraqi men travelling through Germany with allegedly forged Greek diplomatic passports. The 28-year-old passengers arrived from Namibia to Germany via a transit route and were stopped during border checks when passport officers became suspicious. Police said the two men presented themselves as diplomats and claimed they were travelling to Greece, showing diplomatic passport documents. But after border police spotted inconsistencies, a specialist unit focused on document forgery stepped in. Laboratory checks found the passports were hard to distinguish from genuine documents, but were nevertheless fake. Officers then questioned the men further. Cornered by the investigation, the suspects reportedly admitted they were not diplomats. They said they were Iraqi citizens and that their real aim was to enter Germany and apply for asylum. The two men were held in a transit detention facility. Prosecutors opened a criminal case for alleged “forgery of official documents”, “illegal entry without valid visas and documents”, and “residing without a residence right”. Their asylum applications are to be assessed by Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, BAMF, which will decide after that review whether they can be removed. The case remains under investigation as the asylum review is pending.
