Police arrest man at Orio al Serio airport with window-breaking hammer
Another woman is hit with a ban on returning to the area as thefts from passengers are investigated.
Police in Bergamo arrested a man suspected of stealing from passengers around Orio al Serio airport, after he was found carrying a window-breaking hammer.
The arrest was carried out on 22 October during a control in the city. The 1992-born suspect had already been arrested in 2025 for similar airport-area crimes and is described as having prior convictions.
Investigators reconstructed a series of thefts targeting people in external areas and car parks at the airport, with reports filed in recent months. Police said the items were taken from passengers in transit.
The man was located by patrol units from the Questura of Bergamo after authorities traced him in town. He was detained under a prison custody order issued by the judge for preliminary investigations at the Tribunale di Bergamo, as part of the investigation coordinated by the Bergamo prosecutor’s office.
During the control, police found him in possession of a martelletto frangivetro, a tool used to break car or window glass.
On the same morning, police also carried out a separate preventive measure against a 1994-born Italian woman suspected of similar predatory conduct in the airport area. The measure imposed a ban on returning to the Comune di Orio al Serio.
Authorities said the operation fits into a broader prevention and territorial control plan agreed with the prefecture, the questura and other police forces focused on places with high passenger concentration, including the airport.
The suspect remains in custody following the prison order, and the woman is subject to the regional ban while the investigation continues. Under Italian law, both are presumed innocent until a final conviction.
