Police and prosecutors launched a nationwide offensive in Romania as part of “Operation JUPITER”, with over 270 home raids under way on 6 November. The action is coordinated by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice and the Romanian General Inspectorate of Police. Authorities say the operation aims to dismantle criminal networks, recover damages and put suspected suspects behind bars. Investigators are looking into a broad range of alleged offences. These include tax evasion, money laundering, fraud, embezzlement, computer fraud and trafficking in counterfeit products. The probe also covers abuse in office, qualified smuggling, illegal possession and rules violations involving weapons and ammunition. Police say special attention is being paid to environmental crimes, including the illegal disposal, holding, abandonment, dumping or arson of waste outside authorized areas. Alongside economic and environmental cases, raids target allegations linked to street crime and violence, including pimping, loan-sharking, aggravated theft, handling stolen goods, and illegal logging or theft of trees. Authorities also list offences such as disturbing public order, threats, violation of domicile, assaults and the use of dangerous objects. Investigators are additionally working on cases involving clandestine installations used to connect directly to utility networks or bypass metering. People found during the searches will be taken in for questioning, with prosecutors to apply the legal measures in each case. Police say the operation includes documenting the full alleged criminal activity, recovering prejudice and seizing assets obtained illegally. The investigation is ongoing.
