Poland arrested a man accused of planning to assassinate Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the country’s defence minister, authorities said on October 11. Tusk posted that the suspect who threatened him had been arrested, praising police for acting “rapidly and decisively”. Interior Ministry information earlier pointed to attempts on both leaders, according to the officials involved. At a press conference, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka said information about a potential assassination plot targeting Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz was passed to police through the State Protection Service. The Interior Ministry said it took steps based on the police intelligence. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski told TVP Info that police arrested a man in his sixties in the Lower Silesia region in southern Poland. He said security agencies traced the suspect through a detailed analysis of content published online. State security officials held meetings with police, the State Protection Service and the Internal Security Department over the weekend, after the threat information was circulated. “We take this case extremely seriously,” said Jacek Dobrzynski, spokesman for the minister coordinating intelligence and security services. Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz thanked police for their response. Police have placed the country on maximum alert after recent knife attacks, and Tusk condemned them as part of a “cult of violence.” The suspect has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.
