Poland detains 55-year-old Russian over alleged rail espionage photos
Court remands him in custody for three months for alleged work for foreign intelligence.
Poland has detained a 55-year-old Russian citizen suspected of spying for a foreign intelligence service after photographing trains and rail infrastructure, police said.
The man was arrested in Świdnica by officers from the district police in Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The court sent him to custody for three months.
Police say they seized information storage devices during checks. On them, investigators found hundreds of thousands of files containing photographs of locations and key transport facilities in the region, including images stored outside Poland.
Prosecutors and police allege the material could be used to harm the security of the state. The investigation was carried out with the Świdnica prosecutor’s office and the Central Bureau for Cybercrime Investigation in Wrocław.
The suspect was charged under Article 130, paragraph 1 of Poland’s Criminal Code, covering activity for the benefit of foreign intelligence.
As the case proceeds, Polish special services coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak said Russia runs hybrid operations against Poland and other European countries, using so-called one-off agents paid several thousand euros, and described how operations may involve both attackers and people documenting events. He said the detention was atypical compared with earlier cases where Russian intelligence did not use Russian citizens directly.
The man is currently in pre-trial detention following the court’s three-month custody order.
