Police in Warsaw arrest Ukrainian suspect in alleged Russia-backed diversions
He is linked to a September fire near Romarm in Brasov, Romania.
Police in Poland have detained a 25-year-old Ukrainian man suspected of involvement in a group allegedly preparing diversions on orders linked to Russia.
The suspect, identified as Artyom S., was arrested by officers of Poland’s Central Investigation Bureau, following information gathered by Romanian authorities. Investigators say the case centres on a fire in mid-September near Romarm, a state defence company in Brasov, Romania.
Romanian services believe the fire spread across an area of about 1,000 square metres. They say Artyom S. may not have carried out the arson himself. Instead, his alleged role was to carry out reconnaissance, including identifying the target, and to ensure funding for the operation.
Romanian authorities also say Artyom S. may have worked with two Belarusian citizens. Those two people have been detained in Germany.
Police are also checking whether the group had plans to strike other targets. Among the possible goals mentioned are training centres for Ukrainian military personnel, state and private weapons-producing companies, and other industrial facilities.
The investigation is ongoing, and Artyom S. remains under suspicion following his arrest in Poland.
