Police detained 200 people during riots in Milan for a second straight day, with most of those held still under 18. The unrest began on Saturday, when demonstrations took place in Milan and other Italian cities over affordable housing and better social conditions. On Sunday, more groups were reportedly calling for another day of protests via social media. In Milan’s city centre, young people clashed with police. Demonstrators tried to break into shops and damage shop windows, throwing paving stones and pyrotechnics at officers. Police responded with tear gas, water cannon and batons. Tourists were forced to flee as some shops closed, and firefighters later helped free those trapped. In some areas, residents also confronted the masked protesters by pouring water from their windows, the report says. Later, heavily armed units formed a security cordon in front of La Scala, where a concert was scheduled, according to the newspaper La Repubblica. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said police made the 200 detentions. The Milan Cathedral also had to stop guided tours early, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called a public order meeting for Monday. Police said there is no information yet on injuries. Lombardy governor Attilio Fontana urged a tough response from police. Milan mayor Beppe Sala said the city needs more officers, pointing out that he has been calling for reinforcements for some time. The detained people were taken into custody, and police have not reported further outcomes such as charges or court dates.
