Five men have been jailed after attempting to steal two vehicles from a business in Fellscliffe, near Harrogate, before leading police on an early-morning pursuit. Shane Ali, 33, of Linden Road, Leeds, and James Coffey, 48, of New Village Way, Morley, were sentenced to 31 months and two years and six months respectively. Travis Neagle, 31, of Bradford Road, Batley, received 22 months, while Marcus Durant, 31, and Lewis Jackson, 34, were jailed for 20 months and 2 years 10 months. The court heard that at around 4.40am on Tuesday, November 4 last year, North Yorkshire Police received a report that an Iveco truck and a Renault Master van had been stolen from the premises in Fellscliffe. Officers responded quickly and, within minutes, a roads policing officer spotted the stolen Iveco on the A59 near Blubberhouses. A blue Volkswagen Passat, linked through police intelligence to suspected burglary activity, was following behind and believed to be acting as a spotter vehicle. Police followed both vehicles along the A59 towards Bolton Abbey before the Passat turned onto Bark Lane in Addingham. The Iveco then attempted to reverse into a police vehicle before speeding away at about twice the speed limit. During the pursuit, two occupants jumped from the moving Iveco, which rolled into a wall. Officers boxed in the Passat and arrested three occupants, Ali, Coffey and Neagle, at the scene. A police dog named Rhun and his handler were used to search the area. Lewis Jackson was found hiding in a bush around 100 metres away, and was detained after the dog was deployed. Later that morning, residents in Addingham reported seeing a suspicious man covered in mud, particularly on the lower half of his clothing. The man entered the village library and attempted to arrange transport. West Yorkshire Police attended and identified him as Marcus Durant, who was arrested shortly afterwards following coordination with North Yorkshire Police. The stolen Renault Master van was recovered later that day and examined for forensic evidence. At York Crown Court, Ali’s sentence of 31 months and Coffey’s two years and six months were imposed for theft of a motor vehicle and burglary. Coffey was ordered to serve his term consecutively to an existing sentence for a separate matter. All five men have now been sentenced following their April plea and appearance at York Crown Court.
