Leipzig police arrested two suspected cable thieves after they seized about 300 kilograms of copper cables hidden in a transporter. The arrests were made after a tip shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday, when informants told officers that two people had driven a transporter onto a field and become stuck. Police located the vehicle and found a 34-year-old and a 27-year-old at the scene. After consulting the public prosecutor’s office in Leipzig, officers carried out a search of the transporter by court order. Inside, they discovered around 300 kilograms of copper cables that appeared to have been stolen shortly beforehand. Both men were arrested and taken to the Central Police Custody. Officers also launched an investigation into theft in a particularly serious case. On the same police update, officers reported other incidents in Leipzig and the surrounding area, including a flat fire in Connewitz on Wolfgang-Heinze-Straße, where residents were able to return after firefighters extinguished the blaze. Elsewhere, police said they also dealt with a theft-related escape attempt involving a stolen VW Tiguan, after the driver fled when officers tried to stop the car, and later crashed into a roadside bollard. The driver was detained and will be brought before an investigating judge. In Dreiheide, a private sauna burned down in the early hours of Saturday, causing damage estimated at several tens of thousands of euros. Investigations into arson were opened in both the fire incidents. In the copper cable case, the two arrested men are due to be presented to an investigating judge today, who will decide on further detention.
