Police used tear gas and detained more than 100 people during the first hours of a large protest in Paris, France, as clashes erupted between demonstrators and officers. The protest drew high school students, university students and activists, alongside the Yellow Vests. By lunchtime, around 100 people had been arrested in the capital, including 21 arrests outside the CNews offices. Windows were smashed at the CNews headquarters, which is owned by billionaire Vincent Bolloré. In Place de la République, police fired tear gas as the march began, while groups of young people fought with officers around Lyon’s Place Bellecour. In Lyon, protesters launched pyrotechnic materials at police, who responded with tear gas. In Marseille, dozens of demonstrators briefly entered the city hall while shouting, “It is revolution, we have conquered the Bastille,” before they were dispersed by police who positioned themselves to prevent further access. French Interior Ministry sources said the far left was behind incidents aimed at “degenerating the marches,” and ordered prefets and police forces to respond firmly. The situation was still unfolding as a new crisis meeting was called for 18:00 local time at the French Ministry of the Interior, with participation estimates across France nearing 200,000 people.
