Police warns of attempted fraud calls in Contwig, posing as officers
Multiple calls on 12 October 2026 targeted older residents with a fake police operation.
Police in Contwig reported a recent arrest and used the case to warn residents about attempted fraud calls.
On 12.10.2026, unknown callers targeted older people in the Contwig area with attempted “police” fraud. The suspects claimed to be police officers and tried to gain trust by referring to a supposedly police measure.
The police said the scam aims to unsettle victims with invented stories, including claims about arrests or allegedly found lists. Once trust is gained, callers try to obtain information about victims’ financial circumstances and whether they have cash or jewellery at home.
Authorities urge people not to share details about their assets, cash or jewellery over the phone. Suspicious calls should be ended immediately, and victims should not let themselves be pressured.
If in doubt, residents should call their local police station themselves using a phone number they look up independently, not a number provided by the caller. The police also warn that a displayed number or a claim that “the police are calling” can be used to mislead people.
Police also asked residents to speak with older relatives, friends and neighbours about the fraud method. The arrest reported by police in Contwig was described as the latest status in the investigation.
