A 46-year-old Polish man was arrested in Vila Real de Santo António, in Portugal’s Algarve, to serve a prison sentence for homicide after he was located by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ). The Tribunal da Relação de Évora (TRE) said the man also has to serve time for serious bodily harm. At the court hearing, he declared he did not consent to his handover to Poland and did not waive the specialty rule, which limits how a person can be tried in the requesting state. The PJ said the arrest followed a report of an attempted assault on a woman. The alert led officers to intervene in the area of Faro, where they identified the suspect despite him having no home in Portugal. Police then confirmed his identity and located an arrest request issued by Polish authorities, with a view to extradition. The operation involved the Police Marítima of the local command in Vila Real de Santo António. After today’s TRE hearing, an eight-day period was granted to present opposition. The court ordered that he remain in a prison facility while further procedural steps take place.
