Lyon police deny arrest attempt for Raphaël Arnault, just a summons
Prosecutors in Lyon say no instruction was given for his arrest.
Raphaël Arnault, founder of the Jeune garde, was not arrested after a claim by La France insoumise that police tried to stop him on the way off a train at Paris’s Gare de Lyon. Police and the courts deny the allegation, saying officers were only attempting to hand him a summons.
The dispute centres on an alleged incident Tuesday morning. La France insoumise said Arnault was targeted after leaving his train on the quays by the Gare de Lyon in Paris, but police and judicial authorities describe it as a “simple remise de convocation” tied to the Quentin Deranque case.
The Lyon public prosecutor’s office states: “Ni le parquet de Lyon ni les juges d’instruction du tribunal judiciaire de Lyon n’ont donné pour instruction aux forces de sécurité intérieure de procéder à l’interpellation de ce député” in connection with procedures currently being handled by magistrates at the Tribunal judiciaire de Lyon.
La France insoumise said the police plan involved interrupting Arnault, reportedly due to an error about which train carriage he was in. A source close to the investigation, interviewed by Le Parisien, instead describes an effort to serve the summons rather than carry out a surprise arrest.
Investigators had tried for several days to contact Arnault through usual channels without success. With the help of the SNCF, they then attempted to deliver the document when he arrived by train.
The Quentin Deranque case is linked to the February death of Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old militant. He died after being struck violently on the ground by several people in masks in the Lyon area, during an event on the sidelines of an appearance by LFI euro MP Rima Hassan.
Legal proceedings are underway against multiple people described as close to Arnault, with some being arrested and placed in custody and then charged in connection with murder or complicity.
Arnault was not taken into custody and no arrest order was issued by Lyon prosecutors, while the related judicial process continues.
