Slănic-Moldova mayor arrested by DNA after taking 6,000 euros bribe
Prosecutors accuse Benone Moraru of taking staged payments tied to a water contract.
Slănic-Moldova mayor Benone Moraru was detained by Romania’s DNA over alleged bribery, after prosecutors say he was caught in the act while receiving 6,000 euros.
DNA said Moraru, in his first mayoral term, was held for 24 hours and was scheduled to be taken to the Bucharest Tribunal with a request for 30 days of pre-trial detention.
Prosecutors allege the cash payments were linked to a municipal contract worth 1,464,349.43 lei for “Intervenție în primă urgență, Refacere capacitate alimentare cu apă potabilă din dren la nivelul orașului Slănic-Moldova, județul Bacău.”
DNA claims that in July 2026 the mayor received a first bribe payment of 15,000 euros from a representative of the contracting company. Prosecutors say the money was tied to the award, extension and execution of the contract, with some of the work already settled by the city hall.
Then, on 27 October, DNA says Moraru received another 6,000 euros from the same person connected to the case. Prosecutors say they caught him in flagrante as he received the money.
Moraru remains in custody as prosecutors seek preventive detention through the Bucharest Tribunal, with DNA’s request covering 30 days.
