A 34-year-old man suspected of involvement in the fire that destroyed the Limoges town hall has been arrested, three days after the blaze on 17 October. The suspect was taken into custody in Haute-Vienne with the help of the RAID unit in Bordeaux, then placed in police custody. Prosecutors say the man is listed in the French criminal intelligence database as being linked to the ultraleft movement. The investigation is being handled jointly by the Sub-Directorate for Anti-Terrorist Affairs (SDAT) because of its remit on violent extremism. At this stage, the case has not been classified as terrorism. The anti-terror public prosecutor’s office (Pnat) said the suspect remains under observation. Police also described the man as known to services for having carried out violence against police forces in the past. The fire broke out after disturbances during a mobilization against the rising cost of living in several French cities, including Limoges. Breakers entered the town hall and set it on fire. Inside, the historic part of the building, inaugurated in 1883, was “almost 100%” destroyed, according to authorities. The roof and the belfry collapsed, while firefighters saved only the modern rear section. The investigation is continuing, with the suspect still being kept under observation following his arrest and time in custody.
